Everything you need to know about the PSL Final …
What is the PSL?
The Premier Squash League is the biggest club league of its kind in England, showcasing some of the world’s best players across 10 teams.
Teams are split into Northern and Southern groups, where they each play the other teams at home and away. The top two teams from each group then enter the semi-finals to play for a place in the final.
When is the PSL Final?
Tuesday, May 30th – doors open at 6pm, matches start at 7pm
Where is it?
The National Squash Centre, Rowsley Street, Manchester M11 3FF.
Which teams are playing?
Nottingham and Leicester are in the final after beating Chichester and Surrey respectively in the semi-finals.
Which players will I see?
Some of the country’s finest players over the last decades and emerging stars of the future will be on show this Tuesday.
World No.4 Nick Matthew, one of Britain’s most successful squash players ever, will lead the Nottingham charge for the title. His team includes the talented, Nottingham-born Declan James, currently in the England Academy and ranked No.35 in the world, 21-year-old Richie Fallows, Adam Murrills and World No.27 Millie Tomlinson.
Leicester’s team features England No.3 Daryl Selby, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist for Team England at the 2014 games in Glasgow, England Academy player George Parker, Mark Fuller, Darren Lewis and two-time British Junior Open champion Emily Whitlock – currently ranked 13 in the world at the age of 23.
What are the key matches?
The National Squash Centre’s all-glass show court will be the stage for exciting exhibitions of squash as these two heavyweights meet. With Millie Tomlinson, who broke into the world’s top 30 for the first time this month, taking on Emily Whitlock, two of England’s brightest talents in the women’s game will compete to start proceedings.
Then comes the big one – Matthew v Selby. Both England heroes from Glasgow three years ago, both born winners and both gunning for the title. With just two matches on court beforehand (Adam Murrills takes on Darren Lewis on court 4 at the same time as the women’s game), everything could hinge on this mammoth tie, with the match either poised at 1-1 or 2-0.
Two future stars will then take centre stage as Declan James and George Parker play in the fifth and final game. The pair know each other well from their time spent in the England Academy together but there will be no love lost in a potentially match-deciding game to end the evening.
