Round FIVE – RESULTS & ROUNDUP
Duffield and Surrey top the halfway tables
It was a comparatively early night in the fifth round of the PSL, which marked the halfway point in the leagues season – with only one match running past 10pm (and then only just) as several teams recorded thumping wins.
In Group A Nottingham thrashed Pontefract 5-0 – 20-0 in points – to revive their hopes of a playoff place. Leaders Duffield were taken to a decider at Birmingham, where Steve Coppinger returned to his old hunting ground to beat Chris Ryder and retain Duffield’s position at the top ot the table.
Chapel Allerton were also 3-2 winners at home to newcomers Coolhurst, although that match didn’t go down to a decider as the London side’s run of three wins was brought to an end.
Duffield (82) have a clear lead going into the reverse fixtures, with Coolhurst (66), Nottingham (65), Chapel A (62) and Birmingham (55) all still hopeful of finishing in the top two.
In Group B Chichester hosted unbeaten leaders Exeter and the home side raced into a 3-0 lead to inflict Exeter’s first defeat before the visitors took the top two strings to limit their losses.
St George’s also kept up the pressure on the top positions with a 5-0 win away to Bristol, while reigning champions Surrey took advantage of Exeter’s slipup with a 5-0 home win over Winchester to move into top position.
Surrey (76) take over at the top, while Exeter (71), St George’s (71) and Chichester (65) all have realistic hopes of a semi-final place.
A PSL quarter-century for Tim
The evening was a special one for Surrey’s Tim Garner, who is competing in the UK National League (the National League, the Super League and the PSL) for an amazing 25th consecutive season.
Surrey manager Pete Smith presented Tim with a specially labelled bottle of champagne, which he presumably drank AFTER his match!
Tim recalls:
“I still remember making my national league debut for Lingfield at Bromley Town all those 25 years ago.
“Lingfield qualified by virtue of winning the National KO in 87/88 season beating Nottingham in the final, and we played the 88/89 season in Div2 of the Amex National League (I lost in 5 to Phil Yarrow at Bromley Town on my Nat Lge debut.)
“I remember it vividly as missed last train back to Loughborough Uni, so slept at St Pancras before getting first train back!
“Scarily I won Amex Young Player of the Year that season!”
“At the time I was so excited to have the chance to play in the top league. And it’s brilliant to still have that chance a couple of decades on, though it is still disconcerting when you play someone who wasn’t born on your debut.
