2022 Round ONE
The Premier Squash League 2022/23 season got under way tonight with three cracking matches and wins for Pontefract, St George’s and Nottingham …
Back after a two-year absence (notwithstanding the PSL Cup earlier this year) the Premier Squash League got under way with three thrilling matches around the UK.
In the North, Pontefract hosted RAC as the teams with the strongest squads locked horns in the first of seven rounds. Julianne Courtice and Finnlay Withington put Pontefract two up, and although Sarah-Jane Perry reduced the deficit for RAC Patrick Rooney beat veteran Daryl Selby in straight games to give Pontefract the win.
In Birmingham it was a battle of the Universities which went one way then the next over the four matches. Olivia Besant twice came from behind to put Birmingham ahead before Jared Carter levelled for visitors Nottingham. Kiera Marshall put the home side ahead again, but a three-nil win for Nottingham’s Nick Wall gave the match to the visitors 8-7 on games countback.
Points countback was also needed at St George’s Hill in Sussex where the home side went two-nil up over Scottish visitors Alba Storm thanks to wins from Tesni Evans and Joe Lee. Emily Whitlock started the Alba comeback with a tremendous straight games win over Gina Kennedy, but when Joel Makin went two games up over Eain Yow Ng in the final match the home side couldn’t lose. The young Malaysia took the next three games to secure an impressive win, with St George’s taking the match 8-7 on games.
The next round takes place Tue 22nd Nov with PSL Cup Champions Crawley making their first appearance.
