In Group A Coolhurst and Nottingham, just a point apart in second and third at the start, were level after the first two, and the first four matches, leaving it to Omar Abdel Meguid and Alan Clyne to play the decider, which the Egyptian won in five to give the home team the points.

Leaders Duffield travelled to Pontefract and won all the ties for the loss of a single game, including Nick Matthew who won 3-0 against James Willstrop in the pair’s 50th (at least) meeting.

A great win for Sarah-Jane Perry over Jenny Duncalf put Birmingham ahead at Chapel Allerton, and although the home side levelled, Peter Creed and Nathan Lake both won 3-2 to give the visitors the win.

At Winchester Emily Whitlock put the home side ahead but Chichester stormed back with wins from Robbie Temple, Ollie Pett and Rex Hedrick to keep their playoff challenge on track.

Exeter’s match with St George’s, with the teams tied on 71 points at the start,  was even at one-all and two-all, leaving it to a decider which saw Omar Mosaad beat Borja Golan to the delight of the home fans … “Diamonds are forever,” tweeted one, as they moved up to joint top of the table.

Champions and leaders Surrey looked to be on course for another quick win as they won at numbers four and five at home to Bristol, but great 3-2 wins for David Evans over Adrian Grant and Tom Ford against Adrian Waller set up an unlikely decider, in which Mohamed El Shorbagy beat Peter Barker 3-0 to complete a stunning upset.
